Comments

IMG_1503

The other day I discovered half a dozen comments stuck in my spam filter from the last several months. I have no idea why they didn't go through, but I've tweaked the settings so it shouldn't happen again. Apologies to those whose comments went ignored.

And We're Off! Asia-bound

21A_0411

Today's the day. Tammi and I are off to the airport for our flight to Hong Kong. Even though I'll be away for the next two weeks, I've still got a bunch of posts that I've been working on that should be going up here from Philly, Montreal and cooking at home. There are also some posts queued up on Midtown Lunch and on Analog UltraClay, so stay tuned!

Gone Fishin'

_9A_1185

Actually, I haven't gone anywhere, I've just been tied up with a few things, so I'm calling it a hiatus.

I'll be back post-Labor Day with some news about upcoming trips, more analog antics and a bit of self-promotion here and there.

For the curious, I did not win the DKNY contest last week, which was a real downer, but I appreciate all the support from my friends and fans. On to the next one...

Three Years on the Blog

_MG_8252

Last week makes three years that I've been doing this blog thing. I've bounced from topic to topic, but I hope that over time, a general identity has come together through all my ramblings and pictures.

Looking back at the nearly 1600 posts I've put together over three years, I certainly see where my interests have ebbed and flowed, but I also see an underlying concept that I've had a hard time articulating but hope to express clearly here.

This blog is largely about the urban experience. That's food, drinks, events and arts. Travel is that experience transported both to other cities and to the rural and suburban hinterlands. Urbanites all have to spend time outside of our chosen environment from time to time, but we don't check our values and interests at the city limits.

In the last year, I've begun doing much online both blog related and not. There's my photography, the Examiner column and my other contributions online. With so much going on, it would be easy to let the blog drop off, like so many others. But, to me all of them are interconnected. My photos have always been a prominent part of the site. Nearly every one of those 1600 posts have at least one of my photos in it. Bars and nightlife have always been a part of what this blog has been about. So has food. And travel, clearly.

There's always more to tell and in cases where I'm telling the primary stories elsewhere, there will still be a place here for me to expound upon them.

I have a number of plans for how I want to do that and it will entirely be a matter of trial and error in seeing how it all works out.

So, as I always say, stay tuned.

Travel Day: NY Bound

IMG_3938 - Version 2

I'll be in the air most of the day today, finally heading home after a week and a half in the mountains. I've got plenty of posts to catch up on and a little bit of news coming, too.

Stay tuned.

Aspen Awaits

IMG_1729

At the end of the week, I make my fifth and potentially final trip to Aspen for the Winter X Games. While the weather isn't really my thing, I can't say I haven't managed to enjoy myself sampling the cuisines offered out there.

This week is going to be a bit hectic with packing and errands and pre-trip minutiae, so pardon a slight delay posts this week. I hope to get some Philadelphia posts up when I can manage the time.

Transit Week

0081834_0081834-R1-023-10 - Version 2

For no particular reason, this week I've decided to post some impressions of the various transit systems I've passed through or otherwise explored this year. Enjoy!

Homeward Bound

F1000022

By the time this goes up, Tammi and I will be in the air again, heading for a quick stopover at O'Hare, then on back to the Better Borough. We're giving ourselves a little more time at home this time around to relax and re-acclimate to being at home, catch up on things and maybe to get some cooking done after a couple of weeks out of the kitchen.

Expect some posts in the next week or so about Hawai'i, followed up by various catch up posts from the last few months.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Annual Trip: Hawai'i

IMG_7560

With the wedding strategically placed just before Thanksgiving, we have now canonized our traditional holiday trip as the Anniversary Trip.

Friday morning, we take off for Hawaii for nearly two weeks of fun in the sun. We'll be island-hopping, hitting Oahu, The Big Island and Kauai while we're out there. No major plans yet, we'll just be playing it by ear. It's been an eventful 12 months and the both of us hope to take advantage of our first real downtime since the big day.

Given the lackadaisical flow of posts lately, it's not really necessary to warn that updates will be sporadic, but I am hoping to take some time to regroup and get more consistent all around the interwebs. Expect some news about the blog, the photo site (which I hadn't gotten around to mentioning), Twitter, and Examiner before the year is up. You've been warned.

Self-Promotion: I'm an Examiner

_MG_2504 - Version 2

One of the many factors impinging on my blog update time lately has been my new gig on Examiner.com, a website made up of locals reviewing and reporting on various beats in their area. I'm now their New York nightlife photographer and have been posting on events for the week or so.

So far, I've covered an art opening at Madame X, the anniversary party at Sweet Revenge, and last weekend's I Love Vinyl Party.

If you've got a party, opening or anything else generally nightlife-y going on, let me know and I'll try to come through to cover it.

Stop by the site early and often, as I'm trying to put together posts several times a week. If you want to get it in your feed reader, you can also subscribe.

That said, I do hope to get posting here as well over the next couple days. I've got photos and stories from Seattle, Vancouver and a few leftover from Philly and Los Angeles.

In The Sticks

Co-op City, seen here, is always my marker when I'm entering or exiting the civilized world from the hinterlands. I'll be up in Connecticut for work for a couple days. Back in a bit.

Holiday Weekend

IMG_2948

I'll be taking a little break this weekend to spend a happy Valentine's day at home with Tammi (and do some more cooking). I'll be back on Tuesday with more posts.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Summer X Games 2008. Los Angeles, CA. 2008.

I'll be taking a brief hiatus from the blog. Next week this time I'll be in San Francisco, exploring and such. When I return, expect more SF food, Graffiti and all of that.

See you in a bit.

Back from Puerto Rico

IMG_8116

Tammi and I got back from San Juan last night. It was exactly the relaxing break we needed from a fair amount of stress we've both been under lately. It wasn't a busy, run around everywhere sort of trip, but we managed to eat pretty well and bar hop a bit.

I'll have some posts up in the next few days, including tomorrow's Supermarket Find.

(Btw: If you've noticed a bunch of random test posts in the last couple of days it's the result of much back and forth with my host's helpdesk. I think most of the issues I was running into over the last several months are resolved. This should mean a smoother, more regular posting schedule.)

Irony + +

IMG_0996, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

For those paying attention, I'm quite aware that my recent hiatus of 3 weeks came directly after I resolved to post more. As promised, though, I am back in Aspen and I already have a fair number of things to post about and plenty of time on my hands.

More to come...

Happy 2008!

IMG_7087, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

My New Year's resolution is to keep up with the blog more. Expect photos and stories from Mexico, Philly, and the Holidays in the next few weeks.

And of course, my annual sojourn to Aspen is coming up as well. All that time not skiing or snowboarding ought to allow for a fair amount of writing time.

Happy New Year all!

Back Again

Apologies for the shortage of posts. I've got a ton of Mexico City stories, photos and so on, but haven't had a lot of time to write them up. I'm out in Glendale, California again, very briefly. Hopefully the time away from the usual distractions will give me a chance to get my posting organized again. Expect a fair number of posts coming in the next few days.

I've finally gotten around to sorting through my flickr stream, along with some archives for a new batch of POTDs. Apologies for the absence for so long.

I figured I'd start with a familiar sight, my most photographed building.

The Digital Shoebox

IMG_3260

A couple days ago, I went rummaging through my pre-flickr photos, realizing that I don't really go back to any of my non-posted images very often. I decided to pick some of my better images and post them.

I found quite a few blasts from the past, including shots from festivals, my college reunion and the RNC protests back in 2004. Of course there's a ton of travel photos as well. I finally posted more photos from my trip to Europe with my sister.

I'll break them up into smaller sets as I go through them and deal with proper tagging, for now, check the all out here.

Brooklyn Record: RIP

Sad news: I just heard yesterday that The Brooklyn Record, the general interest Brooklyn blog I wrote for from time to time was closing down. It was a good experience getting into the habit of writing more often, even if I still have a hard time consistently posting.

Hopefully the benefit of one less thing to do will be that I'll spend a bit more time actually writing on this blog. I will be re-purposing my posts from The Record in some fashion soon, I just haven't decided how yet.
::c::

Update: I just went ahead and copied all the posts I wrote on The Record and re-posted them here for the same time/date. There will be some overlap between posts, I wrote about the same things in both places occasionally.

The World According to Clay

the world according to.jpg

Google now offers personalized maps without the geekery previously necessary to put one together. I've wanted to do one since Eric put together a Paris map for his trip there last year.

I've started populating the map with bars I've been to in my travels. At some point, I'll figure out how I want to connect it to the site, in the meantime, click on the screenshot above and take a look.

In the Works

I was just talking to Gallo Loco the other day and he mentioned, for the umpteenth time that we should collaborate on a food blog. I decided to start playing with MT and setting up a multi-author blog. It was pretty straightforward.

Now comes the hard part, figuring out the content. It's in the early stages, so who knows what the final product is, but I'll be sure to keep you posted.

The Bar List

Behind the Bar

There are hundreds if not thousands of bars in New York. Now, I do go to a lot of bars, but I've barely scratched the surface. I have, however, gone to enough that I sometimes lose track of spots that I enjoyed.

Every now and again, people ask for bar recommendations or I have to come up with a place for, say, my 30th birthday party - which I still haven't done. It would be incredibly useful to have a receptacle for my impressions of the bars I've been to.

Following mikeoliver.org's mission statement of 'holding on to things Mike Oliver will forget...' I've decided to use the blog for just such a thing.

So, begins a new feature. Keep an eye out for upcoming posts on bars and boozing.
Expect a few quotes from my brooklyn record posts too. These won't all be reviews as much as (semi-)organized notes.

I'll break down the categories for your searching enjoyment. For all bars click here.

Let me know what I missed in the comments.

Common Grounds on BR

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm writing again for the Brooklyn Record. In addition to my usual beer stories, I'll be doing the Bed-Stuy beat, as I explore the neighborhood more.

Yesterday, my piece on Common Grounds went up. I'm working on some more restaurant and bar reviews as well.

Also see my post on the weekend service changes on the A Train.

Travelogue

I'm moving on Saturday. Today is Tuesday. Many things have yet to be packed.
In order to avoid an obvious form of procrastination, I'm going to take the opportunity to post some brief or pre-written pieces over the next week or so. I may post about the move here and there, but really, I need to focus on the actual move more and writing about it less. In the meantime, enjoy some of what I've had to say about San Francisco, Chicago, Hawai'i, and Montreal among other places.

Diggin in the Crates: Intro

The essential part of moving is purging. Really, when you accumulate as much crap as I do, you have to purge before you can do anything. As mentioned, this has taken me back to my college days. Nothing has taken me back so much as the music. I decided to rip the giant bin full of CDs that's been sitting untouched for the last several years. Most of them are CDs that I acquired while I was a DJ and Music Director for the college radio station.

In the last week I've ripped 2352 songs. Mostly it's Hip-Hop and R&B from my 1995-1999. I've heard some tracks that I haven't listened to in 10 years.

The DITC will be a series of posts about what I've found....

Graffiti of the Day: Camputee Press

IMG_0542, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

Graffiti is one of my favorite photo subjects. I feel as though that's been neglected in the blog so far.
To rectify that, I'm introducing a new Graffiti of the Day feature. Now, I don't get into the Graffiti vs Street Art debate. It's all Graffiti to me whether it's spray paint on a wall, paint on wood tiles, pasted paper or metalwork.
I'll try to add as much about the piece featured as I can recall.
This shot was taken in the SOMA area of San Francisco earlier this year. It's by The Mac.

Introductions...

I suppose the best way to start this entire enterprise is to explain myself.

Right now I have no idea how personal this blog will be or even if it will ultimately be a single blog or a collection of blogs, so I'm not sure what information is relevant. I might as well include as much as I can and go from there... More will come out as I write more and eventually I'll actually have a bio collected.

My name is Clay, I live in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York City and I have for the last 20+ years.

I like to enjoy the pleasures of life, particularly eating, drinking and traveling (mostly to places where I can eat and drink new things). I'm an explorer at heart and live to try out new experiences.

My various obsessions, beyond food and drink, are photography, writing, music, graffiti and the random little details around us everyday. I write the occasional piece for Brooklyn Record, mostly on the above topics.

My day job is to perform Mac geekery for an unnamed media company that leads sports world wide.

That's as good a start as any, I suppose. Pardon the inconsistancies while I sort everything out.
Enjoy!

Welcome

Welcome.
I'm assuming someone will ever read this blog. I guess that's a start. My plan is to start with things I've written and never published, posted and work my way up from there.

Hopefully by the time this is public, I'll have settled on a design and a format, but for now, don't be surprised if things get switched around regularly. On the top of the list of things I need to figure out before too long is a name. Blah Blah Blog is already taken, it seems. I guess a subject should work itself out pretty soon too.

I imagine travel, food and beer will be pretty prominent, but who knows? Politics, technology, graffiti, music and New York City are all likely topics as well.

Here's hoping I can get this going quickly and smoothly.

Read on....
