With the crap weather we've had lately, this big bowl of Pho hit the spot yesterday for lunch. I've mentioned the soup at Pho 32 before. This was my usual, the #4 with slices of brisket, tripe and tendon on top of a pile of noodles in a deeply beefy broth. All for $8.
I've returned to the Better Borough from Aspen just to find snow, sleet and freezing rain in the forecast, just hours away.
I'm so sick of Winter.

Aspen. 2009.
I like the way this shot came out. It reminds me of an old film photo. I was fiddling with the shutter speed, making it faster so I could get more definition. In the end, I only ended up getting darker images but at least here it worked out.

The Wine Spot, Aspen. 2009.
I will say this about Aspen, they have plenty of fireplaces available. It's one of those things I don't come by very often, but enjoy a great deal. There are few things more comforting on a cold night than sitting by a fire and drinking a glass of wine.

Downtown Aspen, CO. 2009.
I've mentioned that Downtown Aspen is heavily populated with Furriers and Art Galleries before. What I didn't mention was that many of these galleries draw in their customers with symbols of their rustic surroundings. More than one place is guarded by life-size statues of Grizzly Bears and other animals including this humble foal.
Perhaps this is just a limitation of my citified imagination, but I can't fathom an appropriate place in any home for statues of wildlife.

As we're getting ready for our honeymoon in Paris, my first visit comes to mind. My sister and I arrived in Paris after a balmy New Year's in Barcelona. Our arrival in Paris immediately preceded the biggest snowstorm the city had seen in ages. We knew the weather was going to be cooler, but this was completely unexpected.
The weather this fall should be significantly more moderate (I hope!)

Despite the tone of the photo, the vibe at this bar on a Thursday night was lively and fun. I hung out here for a round as I was waiting to meet up with ToJ to pick Guy up from the airport. I had passed it before but never went in. I'd go back with a group of friends.
Upper Haight, San Francisco. 2008.
I saved the best for last. Guy, ToJ and I were waiting for a seat at Magnolia in the Upper Haight. While we waited, this woman, who was clearly high on something, yelled, threatened, strutted and flailed about. She was screaming til hoarse at this guy who did little more than follow her as she paced and harangued.
We had to feel pretty bad for this guy. During all this, his dog apparently in heat, hopped up on hind legs and repeatedly humped his leg.
Now that's a pretty bad day.

Smokes actually. A couple of them went out 5 times to light up while I sat there. It was amazing. One of them spent most of his time between smokes rolling his next one.

Atocha station has an interesting significance in my memory. My sister and I stayed a couple blocks away from Atocha station when we were in Madrid on our Euro-Trip. It's a big beautiful station and strikingly, it houses a climate controlled rain forest in the remnants of the original station.
It was one of the landmarks that we both remembered very clearly. A little over a year later, it was at the center of the March 11th bombings. It was jarring. One of the great benefits of traveling, as far as I'm concerned, is that it tangibly connects us to places we might otherwise only see or hear about abstractly on television or in movies. The flip side of that is that when someone happens to try to blow it up, it hits closer to home.

I've known Henrietta since she was a bartender at Black Star, years ago. Now she is one of the folks running the show at Dove. I took this shot of her a month or two ago. I was rather drunk and stopped in after coming from a party. I love shots where people are in the dark lit by a single electronic screen. This shot in particular, is great because of her expression. I had no idea at the time, but apparently, she got called in in late saturda night while she was out at a party in Brooklyn because suddenly _all_ of the computers went down. This was one of a group of Missionaries we came across when we went out to see the pyramids. We talked to them briefly after climbing up the smaller pyramid. The conversation was pretty funny. When we told them that we were from New York, one of the guys was blown away. "Oh, wow! New York! Wow! I've never been anywhere like that. New York!"
Of course, I pretty much had the same reaction when I heard they were Missionaries from Utah...

Several years ago, when I first saw this piece, I was transfixed. Mostly by the intensity in her eyes, but also by the clear African characteristics of her face. That's something you don't often see in museum art.
Later, I was struck with deja vu while standing in a huge open hall at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. "Fountain of the Four Parts of the Earth" by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux depicts this woman, along with four other representatives of the peoples of the world, holding up the globe. It took me 10 minutes of racking my brain to understand why I recognized her.
It wasn't until my recent visit to the Met that I finally understood her expression. According to the caption, the bust is captioned, "Why Born a Slave?"
I may be getting a bike tomorrow. This will make Tammi very happy. I'm just hoping to avoid injury. Wish me luck.

Shiodome is a mall/office tower complex not far from where we stayed in Ginza. This clock was on the side of the media building. I don't know where it's from, but a dozen kids and their parents stood out in front of it for half an hour waiting to see it go off at noon. On the hour, an animatronic display went off for a couple minutes, everyone was rapt.

I first tasted port in Lisbon. After dragging my jet-lagged sister around town all day, I had one last stop. We stopped at the Solar do Vinho do Porto - Lisbon, a branch of the government organization dedicated to the promotion of port wine. The main room looked more like a living room than a bar. Apparently the word "solar" in traditional English is the "upper chamber of a medieval house," presumably similar to a parlor or sitting room. At least that's what my computer's dictionary says.
I hadn't had port before. At the time I didn't know much about wine in general. I wanted to try it because it was so specifically Portuguese. I've been a fan ever since. While in Lisbon, I picked up a bottle each of red port and white port. White port is great, but you can't find it here in the states. When done right, it has a nutty caramel flavor that's incredible. The closest thing I've gotten to a good white port is a Marsala I got from Italian Wine Merchants last year.
Outside of that, I'm 'stuck' going after 10 and 20 year old red port as I find it. I've been considering buying a 1977 for myself for my 30th birthday this year, but I haven't actually done it yet...

dba, Frenchman Street, New Orleans, 2004.
I've been going to dba in New York for years. When I found out they had a sister bar in New Orleans, I had to check it out the next time I went there.
The space is much bigger than the New York location, taking up two storefronts. The photo above is of on half of the space. To the right, there's a door to the other room which has a stage up for performances and the other side of the double bar.
The beer selection is exactly what I'd expect from dba: very extensive, and inclusive of many local beers. They get creative with the beer too. This is where I had my first "Dirty Ho," a beer cocktail mixing about 75% Hoegarden with a Framboise lambic. It's a pretty fantastic concoction, adding the fruit flavor of the lambic livens up the hoegarden, which in turn cuts the excess sweetness of the lambic.
The Frenchman Street strip of bars and restaurants sits just a few blocks outside the French Quarter, but is thankfully worlds away from the contrived excess of Bourbon Street. On my first trip to New Orleans, a friend who lived out there at the time took us to a couple of bars on Frenchman. It took me a couple trips before I could figure out how to get back there. It's a much more local scene so it totally bypasses the bead-throwing and nonsense found down the road. The strip runs about two or three blocks and it's full of music. Nearly every bar had some performance listed.
The last time I was at dba New Orleans, was two years ago. Tammi and I caught the Tony Dagradi Organ Trio performing with one of the Marsalis brothers on drums.

Summer 2003, Paris.
Ah, Paris. The Metro shut down, cops in full force and tear gas in the air.
My second trip to Paris happened to coincide with a general strike. It was all very fascinating. Shutdowns were scheduled and announced daily. Businessmen rollerbladed and rode motorcycles to work, and traffic was jammed everywhere. Thankfully, I stayed two blocks from Place de la Concorde, so walking everywhere was pretty convenient.
This was also a month or so before the notorious heatwave that killed thousands of elderly.

This is Burger Joint, in the basement of the Parker Meridian. It's a great, no-frill's burger shack hidden deep in the heart of one of New York's fanciest hotels. There is absolutely nothing fancy about this place. The menu lists 5 options: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Grilled Cheese, French Fries or a Whole Pickle. The tagline is "If you don't see it we don't have it." The fries are served in a brown paper bag and they stock one beer, Sam Adams, by the glass or pitcher.
I'm rarely up at 57th Street, so I don't get these tasty burgers nearly often enough. I think it's been 2 years since my last fix. Shake Shack opens this week, but I'm sure the lines will be ridiculous. Maybe I'll head up here next time I've got a craving. I'm sure the train ride to 57th and back would still take less time than standing in that line.

I always liked this shot. I took it last spring on a walkabout in Williamsburg. I discussed this image and a few of my others on The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC our local NPR station last summer. It was very exciting. I listen to the show nearly every day, so actually being a guest was a great experience. This was about a year ago, when protests were erupting all over the country.
I come from a family of immigrants. So does nearly everyone else in this country to some degree. It's always been inexplicable to me the way some people can call themselves 'real' Americans and judge or exclude others because they aren't from here. The foundation of this nation has always been immigration, people have come here from everywhere for opportunities and freedom. There's always some group that somebody doesn't want here. Now it's the Mexicans, before that it was the Jews or the Irish or the Italians or the Germans. And it's always the same arguments. "They don't assimilate into our culture;" "They stay to themselves in enclaves speaking some foreign language;" "They don't have our values." It's always something.
So these signs in Williamsburg struck me. Every immigrant community has the same sort of experience. They come in and form communities for support. They bring some of the comforts of home with them, the food, the language, the music. It's normal. Yet it really pisses some people off - when some people do it.
Those trying to crack down on immigration complain about 'these people' not learning 'our language.' But I've never seen the Minutemen patrolling these enclaves, harassing these immigrants or telling the Hasidim to speak 'our language.'

I noticed these the last time I went to New Orleans in the spring of 2005. I love the design. Apparently they were so popular that they kept getting stolen. No one knew where they were disappearing to until after September 11th. Once the airport rules changed, the authorities found them over and over again in tourist's luggage. I decided to go the legit way by shooting this picture. Tammi also bought a plastic cast of one for me as a souvenir from one of those cool little shop on Magazine Street.
I haven't yet made it back to NOLA since the storm, but I hope to in the next year or so.

Blind Tiger Ale House was a great bar on Hudson in the West Village. This shot was taken on its closing night a couple years back. I've been thinking of my old haunts recently. The Blind Tiger almost took the spot of my former home away from home, Black Star before it closed too.
The story of BT's closing is annoyingly familiar. The landlords got greedy asking for rent, started renovating the place to appeal to some of the boutiques a block away on Bleeker, then gave The Tiger the boot. Over a year went by, no boutiques took the bait and now it's going to be a starbucks. What a waste.
Meanwhile, Blind Tiger can't get a liquor license at its new location on a pretty lame stretch on Bleeker near 7th Ave. I haven't even made it over there yet.

Tammi's running the NYRR Al Gordon Snowflake 4-Mile this morning.
I am back in Brooklyn after a slightly longer than planned trip to Philly. I enjoyed it, but was glad to sleep in my bed last night.
This was a bar and club in Old City that I've been to a few times. I took my sister here for her 21st birthday a couple years ago. It burned down early this month. Thankfully no one was hurt, but it's a loss for everyone.

I really like this building in case you couldn't tell. ::c::
Expect many more pictures of the Empire State Building. I work near and shoot it pretty regularly. I even have a set dedicated to it on my Flickr Stream. ::c::
Now I have an excuse to post my old snow photos.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Hanson Place, Fort Greene, Brooklyn
Today's photo is in honor of Tammi's first race of the year today. I'd be out there, but I'm sick and it's not getting any warmer than 20 degrees. Next time.
Well, so much for snow. Here's a little taste of what we're missing. Have no fear, it's still going to be insanely cold.
I'm back in Brooklyn so is winter. Snow is in the forecast tonight.
Stay warm.
