New Orleans. 2008.

I saw Fred Ratke's face looking back at me from walls all over New Orleans last Fall. Also known as "The Grey Ghost," Ratke is an anti-graffiti crusader, who paints over pieces all over the city. This sticker is one of the many retaliatory caricatures I found.

On my first trip to SF, I took the above photo the first time I went to San Francisco in 2002. It was when I first started shooting graffiti and I was pretty excited to see this Bob Marley quote.

On my last night in San Francisco, I passed the same spot in a cab, but the piece was different:

I don't know what happened, but I'm glad it's still there in some form or another.

I came across some great, huge wall sized graffiti all around San Francisco. They were striking to me, coming from New York, where it's harder to find those giant works. I got a bunch of shots of those, particularly with interesting Wildstyle pieces. I'll be posting those eventually, but I thought I'd spend this week posting the smaller, uncommon work: Stencils, Paste-Ups, stickers and so on.

I love this updated interpretation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it's a modernization you don't see so often. It almost reminds me of a more sincere "Buddy Christ" from Dogma.

I finally tore myself away from the geekfest bubble for a couple of hours last night and encountered some great graffiti. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, so I had to shoot these with my phone. In a couple hours the conference will be all done and I can go shooting. I can't wait to get at this stuff with some decent light and a real camera. I just hope my wide angle can capture it all.

It's been an interesting week in the Presidential campaign, which is not something I've been able to say for some time. Most interesting have been the conventions of concession, which we only begin to recognize when someone fails to follow them.

I'm doing my best to avoid television for as much of tomorrow as I can, but I'm sure I'll hear what Hillary has to say before the day is done. Hopefully, we can keep it together and start the campaign off right.

Artist: US Senator.

A month or so ago, I came across a few US Senator pieces out in Williamsburg. Until then, I had only seen his stuff in San Francisco, under the freeway in SoMa. Despite the name, the paste ups are invariably portraits of US Presidents, usually accompanied by the number president they are.

I'm not sure how many are around. So far, I've just seen this one and one of Nixon (with no number, that I could see).

Given all the time I've spent in the Philly area of late, it's ridiculous that I haven't posted much of the street art I've shot down there.

To counter that, I'm making this week "Philadelphia Street Art Week." I'll be highlighting some of the graffiti, mostly stickers and paste-ups that is all over the areas of Center City I end up frequenting.

There are a few artists that are just prolific, posting memes all over the place, and I'll post some of them later this week, but I wanted to start with this collaboration from two artists I've only seen once. A Little Birdie and Mousse are both on Flickr if you'd like to see more of their work.

We get a two-fer tonight since I started working on the new Graffiti of the Day feature late at night, I get to post one before and the other after midnight.

This shot is a close up of a freehand piece painted by ElbowToe outside of 11 Spring Street a few days before the event.

I had been out of town for most of the build up to the big weekend so I hadn't seen any of it. ElbowToe was actually there working on it, so I thought he was just putting it up. Afterwards I discovered that it had been splashed and he was touching it up after repainting portions of it.

Graffiti is one of my favorite photo subjects. I feel as though that's been neglected in the blog so far.
To rectify that, I'm introducing a new Graffiti of the Day feature. Now, I don't get into the Graffiti vs Street Art debate. It's all Graffiti to me whether it's spray paint on a wall, paint on wood tiles, pasted paper or metalwork.
I'll try to add as much about the piece featured as I can recall.
This shot was taken in the SOMA area of San Francisco earlier this year. It's by The Mac.
