Barcelona Graffiti

_MG_9281 - Version 2

My last trip to Barcelona was back in 2002. I was already taking a lot of photos, but not nearly as seriously as I have been in recent years. Using a borrowed point & shoot, I shot scenery and my sister, who I was traveling with and, for the first time, lots of graffiti.

The street art scene was starting to pick up here in New York, but it wasn't until I saw all the interesting pieces up in Barcelona that I started to really consider photographing it.

This week on my non-analog Tumblr blog, I'll be posting my pics of the local artwork I came across.Enjoy!

Freedom, First and Foremost

IMG_2154

When I started this blog, I made a conscious effort to avoid spending too much time on politics. Anyone who's heard me rant about the state of the world, the country or the city knows that I have ... strong opinions

More than 3 years later, I'm surprised at how much restraint I've managed. Don't worry, I don't plan to start including my partisan invective in my food, photos and travel posts.

That said, my friend Yelena has no such compunctions against loudly proclaiming her opinions on all sorts of topics and I often (if not always) agree with her. Today in particular, which is the point of this post.

This morning she revealed the one value that she holds fundamentally above all else: The First Amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Read the post for her particularly awesome take on the subject of our most innate of freedoms. For my part, I'll let the words stand on their own.

Philly: Yarn-Bombing

_MG_7740 - Version 2

So, yeah. This is a thing. Part street art, part guerilla craft campaign, this tree on Rittenhouse Square is one of many knitted cozies around familiar objects I've seen in both Philly and New York. Interestingly, it's probably the only street art that Tammi's spotted and identified before I did.

Graffiti: Specter's Portraits

IMG_4267 - Version 2

It's been a while since I've been able to go out shooting graffiti, but I was happy to come across this Specter piece off Classon near Lafayette. His work is among the pieces up in Make It Fit at Brooklynite Gallery.

There's a similar mixed media piece up in the gallery that has startled a few passersby late at night in the neighborhood. The show is up through next week.

Boston, Briefly

_MG_1266 - Version 2

Last week I spent about 12 hours traveling in order to have a 2.5 hour meeting in Boston.
Oh, the corporate world.

This is how I saw most of the town that day: through a car or train window. Going there, though, reminded me of how long it had been since I've been up there. Had I a bit more time, it would have been fun to wander around a bit by the Commons or Newbury Street or to check out the Shepard Fairey exhibit at the ICA.

Tammi and I have talked about trying ot make the trip up there, but with so much happening this summer, I'm not sure if I'll make it. The idea of seeing a 'street artist,' even one as mainstream as Fairey migrate from paste-ups and stickers to a full-scale museum show is intriguing. I really hope to have the opportunity to make it up there, before it closes in August.

DC: Coal is Dirty

_MG_9062

Here's some more political graffiti I found off 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Maybe I'm seeing a trend where one doesn't exist, but I found it interesting how directly political some of the graffiti in DC was.

This collage of paste-ups pieced together slogans and imagery in protest against the coal industry, including fliers for a rally last month. There's a fair amount of graffiti that references politics in New York, but in my experience they tend to be broader anti-establishment messages rather than specifically regarding policy.

Work To Do: Posted Pics

IMG_6520 - Version 2

Last week, I finally made it to the Work To Do show at The Combine in SoHo. The experience was overwhelming. Every corner, nook and crevice of the space was used to display some kind of art.

The show is open until April 17th, so I'm definitely going to try to check it out again. I'm sure I'll see a million pieces I missed the first time around.

Photos posted here.

Tonight: Joe Black and Miss Bugs at Brooklynite Gallery

IMG_6837

Tonight the Brooklynite Gallery opens 2 Many Artists, displaying work by British artists Joe Black and Miss Bugs.

As usual, the abandoned storefronts around the corner from my house have become the palette for the visiting artists. Above is a paste up collage portrait of Salvador Dali by Joe Black. And this is Miss Bugs...

Postal Haul, Part 1

_MG_1851

In addition to a load of stickers that I bought at last weekend's Going Postal show in Williamsburg, I also bought this four-part piece by Under Water Pirates. As mentioned before, I've seen his work up in Philly on my visits down there and loved the color coming from this one.

When I finally take some shot of the stickers, I hope to post them as well. More to come.

Brooklynite Gallery Opening: Remed & Zbiok

_MG_3089

Last night I got out to an opening at the Brooklynite Gallery, a new art space just around the corner from our place.

The event was a nice gathering of the arts folks and some folks from the neighborhood I've seen through the years but never known. I also ran into Luna Park, for the second weekend in a row.

I've passed the gallery over nd over since it opened last year, but hadn't been in. From the outside, the space looks to be all of 10 feet deep, but I discovered that there is much more room, including a full backyard full of art on display.

I'm not certain how that space is used during inclement weather like today's snow, but I hope to get another look at it one way or the other when there is less of a crowd there.

I was initially concerned about the idea of a gallery opening p in the neighborhood - and to be sure, the vast majority of people at the opening were clearly not from the neighborhood - but having actually seen the space and learned a little more about it, I'm happy to have a real art space so close to home.

If nothing else, I appreciate that the artists have started using some of the abandoned storefronts in the area as a canvas, leaving one less eyesore to pass on the way to work.

Going Postal Book Launch

Celso

Last night the Ad-Hoc Art Gallery in East Williamsburg hosted a book launch party for Going Postal, a new book by Martha Cooper on Postal Label Graffiti. When I read about it on Wooster Collective last week, it struck my interest. On Flickr, I started the "Postal Label Graffiti" group a couple years ago. The use of these labels as a medium always seemed particularly cool to me in a DIY, alternate-use sort of way.

As a tie-in with the book, Ad-Hoc is hosting a gallery show of many of the artists whose work appears in the book. There was work by artists I've been following for some time as well as a few I've just been finding out about.

While many of the pieces were made up entirely or partially of the postal labels, others riffed on the aesthetic of the labels and went bigger and more creative. Right in the door, these three giant overlapping Celso pieces mimicked the labels. Faust, Rednose, Robots Will Kill and Get 2 had some excellent pieces up that similarly build on the standard label design. Others, like C. Damage switched it up by playing with the Postal Service's blue stripe:

_MG_1728

And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the contingency from Philadelphia. UnderWater Pirate and Malic, whose work I see posted nearly everywhere I go when in Philly had some great work up as well.

All can all be seen in my Going Postal Set on Flickr.

In the back of the gallery, hundreds of stickers were on sale for $5 each. I picked up a few that I'll post in a bit.

If you're interesting in seeing the show, check it out soon. It closes tomorrow, Sunday the 22nd.

In the Haight, I found a shop called Upper Playground that specializes in Street Art-influenced clothing. I picked up the shirt here, designed by Sam Flores, a local artist. I also bought a T-shirt with his version of the Morton Salt Girl and both of his books published by the gallery associated with Upper Playground.

On my first trip to SF, I took the above photo the first time I went to San Francisco in 2002. It was when I first started shooting graffiti and I was pretty excited to see this Bob Marley quote.

On my last night in San Francisco, I passed the same spot in a cab, but the piece was different:

Last weekend, I randomly discovered this installation, in the middle of a strip of vacant storefronts, on Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill. The artist, Aakash Nihalani, may be familiar to those paying attention. A similar piece I found on the sidewalk in Williamsburg was the GOTD over the summer,

This particular installation was commissioned by the Atlantic Assets Group, presumably to beautify some of the empty space popping up on the strip.

Paris: Sarko Paste-Ups

IMG_8232, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

The French may love Obama hands down, but Sarkozy doesn't have quite the popularity. One morning these paste-ups were all all over central Paris. I still only have vague notions of what the messages say, but could tell they weren't particularly flattering. I eventually figured out that one translates to "Yes We Can outsource thousands of jobs from France."

By the evening, they were shredded. I don't know if those were fans of Sarkozy or Obama acolytes offended by the comparison

Deity Art Show

IMG_1936, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

In another display of serendipity this weekend, I planned to meet up with Tammi and our friend Mandy Saturday evening having no idea that there was going to be an art show starting right when I got there.

It turned out that a group named fokus was hosting a gallery show of John Wright, whose work I don't really know and AV One, who I've seen all over town for ages. I got to meet AV One and talk briefly, which was great after all these years of shooting his stuff and seeing his art on Flickr.

I somehow always manage to miss these art openings, so I was really happy to finally have one fall in my lap. It was a good time, I hope to finally start going to more.

I came across some great, huge wall sized graffiti all around San Francisco. They were striking to me, coming from New York, where it's harder to find those giant works. I got a bunch of shots of those, particularly with interesting Wildstyle pieces. I'll be posting those eventually, but I thought I'd spend this week posting the smaller, uncommon work: Stencils, Paste-Ups, stickers and so on.

To start off is this cool paste up that I found on my return to Clarion Alley.

SF Dispatch: Atari Graffiti

IMG_1348, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

Yesterday I saw this piece again for the first time in 6 years. It's a huge wall piece of Atari characters. It's also what I remember as being the first graffiti wall that really caught my interest. Growing up in New York, I've seen graffiti all my life. But seeing this on my first (grown-up) trip to San Francisco, it was the first time I really noticed it.

On all my trips out here since then, I haven't managed to see it again, but this time, I made a point of seeking it out. It's more or less the same as the first time, with some patched up points here. It's a longevity that I generally think of as unusual for graffiti, an aft form that is typically transient. I'm glad it's still there.

Bed-Stuy: The Petition

IMG_8068

Last weekend, I sacrificed one political belief for another. Out of the blue one Saturday morning, the door rang. It was a petitioner collecting signatures to get some democratic candidates on the ballot. I was tempted to just tell him to buzz off. Door to door anything tends to get on my nerves. Worse, the petition was for a couple politicians I'm not so fond of.

Ed Towns and Velmanette Montgomery have been 'representing' me for the entirety of my 22 years in Brooklyn. They have managed to stay in office, as far as I can tell without ever sticking their necks out or taking a stand on anything. It's been a point of annoyance of mine for a long time. People have fought for ages to get Black folks into positions of influence. Yet these people have broken no ground. They've done nothing but continue the long tradition of ethnic patronage politics. Those politicians of the 'movement' generation took positions in groundswells of support and have done nothing appreciable but grown roots. Worse, those like Major Owens and Una Clarke have tried to pass their positions down to their children like a family heirloom. And we've continued to put them in office, in part because we've got no better options, but also in part because we can't be bothered to demand better.

I could have gone on and on about why these two candidates do not have my support. But the petitioner caught my attention. He was in his teens or early, early twenties, dressed 'as the kids do these days' with a T-shirt that went down to his knees and a baseball cap turned just so over his Do-rag.

I couldn't reject someone like that who was actually playing some appreciable part in the process. Hell, he's playing more of a part than I am. I've never volunteered. Not once have I gone out and done anything besides vote for my candidate of choice. So, given the fact that this kid was here at my door on a Saturday morning, I couldn't bring myself to turn him away. I signed it.

I love this updated interpretation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it's a modernization you don't see so often. It almost reminds me of a more sincere "Buddy Christ" from Dogma.

Graffiti of the Day: Clarion Alley

Clarion Alley is the treasure trove I discovered in The Mission the other day. It's between 17th and 18th Streets and goes from Mission to Valencia. I took more than a hundred shots of the pieces up there. A selection of them will be the Graffiti of the Day for the next week. Enjoy! ::c::

I finally tore myself away from the geekfest bubble for a couple of hours last night and encountered some great graffiti. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, so I had to shoot these with my phone. In a couple hours the conference will be all done and I can go shooting. I can't wait to get at this stuff with some decent light and a real camera. I just hope my wide angle can capture it all.

Also, I have no idea if that says Sidem or something else entirely. I'm terrible at reading wildstyle.

It's been an interesting week in the Presidential campaign, which is not something I've been able to say for some time. Most interesting have been the conventions of concession, which we only begin to recognize when someone fails to follow them.

I'm doing my best to avoid television for as much of tomorrow as I can, but I'm sure I'll hear what Hillary has to say before the day is done. Hopefully, we can keep it together and start the campaign off right.

This year I've been trying to make it to more Graffiti Art Gallery shows with moderate success. Mostly, I've missed them or passed through late, well after the opening. Here's one I know I'm going to miss, but wanted to let everyone know about.

Skewville has a 2 day show called Factory Fresh and it's to take place in an old bodega, which sounds really cool.

Down the Rabbit Hole

IMG_6570, originally uploaded by ultraclay!.

Just a week ago, I went on about how I wasn't going to be one of the bike cultists. Since then, I've ridden around Brooklyn a few times, railed against drivers who block the bike lane, planned out future rides, traded notes with other bike riders on routes, gear and websites and spent an afternoon wishing I was riding instead of walking.

It's really amazing how it all happens. Last week, I mentioned to a co-worker that I had just gotten my bike and he told me that he also got a bike in the last week. The next day I'm getting, "So, I hear you got a bike..." It creeped me out at first, but I find myself really enjoying having people to trade notes and maybe ride with some time.

So, I've started to give in to it. I've been hitting folks up for advice and doing my best to learn my way around. I've definitely gotten more comfortable riding in traffic than I thought I would have by now. I'm not sure how soon I think I'll be ready to deal with taxis in midtown - that still scares the hell out of me - but the idea of riding in Manhattan is no longer the scariest thing I can imagine.

Weirder for me is actively thinking on a summer day, "what I really would like to do is get on the bike and ride to xyz." I'm not so sure how to deal with that yet.

More to come...

To counter that, I'm making this week "Philadelphia Street Art Week." I'll be highlighting some of the graffiti, mostly stickers and paste-ups that is all over the areas of Center City I end up frequenting.

There are a few artists that are just prolific, posting memes all over the place, and I'll post some of them later this week, but I wanted to start with this collaboration from two artists I've only seen once. A Little Birdie and Mousse are both on Flickr if you'd like to see more of their work.

The World's Gone Mad

IMG_8200.JPG

I woke up this morning to find the talking heads on TV discussing Rudy Giuliani's speech to the NRA.

I just don't understand.

I mean, seriously. Strip down all the things that make him one of the most terrible people in the world and it still doesn't make sense. Ignore the fact that he was arguably the most divisive mayor in the city's history. Ignore the fact that before being elected, he led the police union in a riot on the steps of city hall, then made a point of barring any and all protests on the same steps when he was elected.

Ignore the fact that he married his cousin.

Ignore his callous disregard of abuses on the part of the NYPD toward the black community. Ignore that this 'hero' released the irrelevant juvie record of a man murdered by police officers. Ignore that much of the carnage happened on September 11th 2001 because he outfitted his Fire Department with shoddy equipment and because he chose to create an emergency operations base in the only building in the entire city to ever be the target of terrorism.

Ignore every terrible thing that he has done and said in and out of office. Forget all of it.

If I had never stepped foot in New York and all I knew about the man was that he was mayor the day that the towers were attacked and that he carried a bullhorn and soothed many in the city and the country, I would think that he deserves a medal. Maybe even a statue.

I can't fathom thinking that these actions on one day would merit the leadership of the United States of America. Those actions on one day did not make him competent or qualified to lead the free world. It does not mean that suddenly he has an understanding of international politics, domestic issues or the federal tax laws.

It doesn't make any sense to me that this man is really, genuinely considered by anyone to be someone that might deserve a single vote for the presidency.

My faith in American common sense diminishes every day that Giuliani is considered a 'frontrunner,' even this ridiculously early in the primary race.
