Philly: Frankford Hall Opens in Fishtown
For Memorial Day Weekend, Tammi and I took a trip down to Philadelphia. High on my agenda for the weekend was to check out the new beergarden in Fishtown, called Frankford Hall. Check it out after the jump...
The first thing I noticed walking into Frankford Hall is just how big it is. You rarely run into this much space in New York. The indoor section is as big as many bars in Brooklyn, with three independent sections, each with it's own bar. Then there's the outdoor space.
Dozens of picnic tables are lined up in a courtyard with another bar, a place to order food (more on that in a bit) and a ping pong table.
It wouldn't be a proper beergarden without several taps of German beer. Kolsch is my preferred summer tipple, but there's a variety of schwrzbiers and others on tap available by the half or full liter. In the name of variety, I stuck to the half liters, but there is something satisfying about hefting a stein to your lips.
Clearly, they also have sausage and other food. We had a few while we sat out in the sun for a couple hours.
This visit was just a week or so after discovering the glory of the kasenkrainer, the cheese stuffed sausage that I had a version of at Smorgasburg and then another, days later at BeerParc. I was (and still am) fascinated by the idea and absolutely had to have yet another take on it.
So. Good.
They also had staff wandering about selling pretzels as big as your head. We resisted for as long as we could before finally giving in.
Over the hours that we were there, the outdoor space filled up, but even then there was plenty of more space available in the other areas.
Frankford Hall has a great selection of food and drink and an amazing space to enjoy it all in. I hope to make it back to Philly before the weather chills so I can enjoy another relaxing afternoon there.
