Brooklyn: The Bed-Stuy Tour Part One

The weather may not quite feel like spring, but despite the cold, the longer days are inspiring me to get outside and do some exploring. Tammi's been taking some classes at the YMCA on Bedford Ave and it's given us an excuse to spend some time wandering that end of Bed-Stuy a bit more.

That's meant brunches at Peaches HotHouse and Black Swan, but also the discovery of a few new places that have been popping up on the radar of late. Last weekend, Tammi and I spent our Saturday over in the corner of the neighborhood that borders Clinton Hill and Williamsburg that's become known as the "Pratt Area" or even, irritatingly "West Bed."

We stopped in some cafes and bars and generally wandered about, meeting up with friends and seeing what's new and noteworthy. See the beginning of our tour after the jump.

The first place to catch my notice is Sud, a new Southern Italian place that opened up just a couple weeks ago on Bedford and Lexington. Although they are currently BYOB, I'm going to assume from the "Vino & Cucina" that they expect to be pouring wine one of these days.

Across the street from Sud is Scratchbread. Known mostly for their kickstarter campaign a while back, this is the production shop for the wholesale breadmaker. They apparently sell to the public for a couple hours every Wednesday evening as well. Since chances are slim that I'll ever be over there at those times, I'll just have to check them out at the Brooklyn Flea.

Possibly the most surprising discovery of the entire day was Bombay Heights. The idea of an Indian restaurant in Bed-Stuy is a little shocking to me. Unlike the sushi place, which I think is just foolish, I might actually order some Indian food. They were closed when we passed by, so no word on whether they deliver to the Stuyvesant end of the neighborhood.

From there, we went on to have breakfast at Bedford Hill, which I'll post about tomorrow.
